This 6th promotion illustrates more than ever the ability of our national champions to roll out their innovations on a large scale and make their mark in France and internationally:

€10 billion in net revenue recorded in 2024
1/3 of the selected laureates based on revenue criteria generate more than €100 million in annual turnover
42,000 direct jobs created in France and internationally
93% of companies have an established international presence
1/4 of the intake made up of DeepTech companies

Among them are some renowned winners, some of whom were already part of the first French Tech Next40 promotion 6 years ago. While in 2019 they were selected on the basis of fundraising, in 2025 they will be selected on the basis of their revenues, which now run into hundreds of millions of euros. These include Alan Back Market, Blalbacar, Brevo, Contentsquare, Doctolib, Vestiaire collective, etc.

Throughout the month of August 2024, we will be looking at start-ups that offer innovative solutions to combat global warming, either directly or indirectly, in particular by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and water, air and soil pollution, as well as helping to preserve raw materials and natural resources.

Among our programmes, French Tech 2030, launched in partnership with the General Secretariat for Investment and Bpifrance, has more than half of its 125 winning start-ups committed to the ecological transition. The GreenTech sector is also strongly represented in the French Tech Next40/120 class of 2024, with 24 companies covering a wide range of fields.

The solutions proposed by the start-ups you can discover in this series are actively helping to change our consumption habits, our production methods and also our modes of transport. Here’s a quick overview of what’s in store for you in the coming weeks!

French Tech Next40/120: call for applications for the 6ᵉ promotion

A support programme

French Tech Next40/120 offers personalised support to the start-ups promoted, particularly in terms of international development, financing, recruitment and intellectual property. Companies also benefit from greater visibility, both in France and internationally.

Objective selection criteria

The selection of start-ups is based on objective criteria such as sales growth and fundraising. To be included in the Next40, companies must have achieved sales of at least €100 million, with annual growth of 15% over three years, or have raised significant funds between January 2022 and April 2025.

For the French Tech 120, they must have achieved sales of at least €20 million with similar growth, or raised significant funds over the same period.

Ecological transition and parity

The winners of the class of 2025 will have to make a commitment to two key issues: the ecological transition, by providing a carbon footprint covering scopes 1, 2 and 3, and gender equality, by communicating their professional equality index (Egapro Index) with a minimum score of 75, or by presenting an action plan to achieve it.

Applications for the 6th promotion of the programme are open until 28 April.

What is French Tech Next40/120?

French Tech Next40/120 is the French Tech Mission programme which supports the 120 most successful French scale-ups with the potential to become international leaders. These companies receive support linked to their development challenges for one year, promoting them in France and internationally.

Since its creation in 2019, the programme has selected start-ups on the basis of their economic performance. To join the Next40 in 2023, start-ups had to either have unicorn status (at least €1 billion in value) or have raised more than €100 million in the previous 3 years. To qualify for the next stage of selection (French Tech 120), they had to have raised at least €40 million or achieved sales of at least €10 million and annualised growth of 25% over 3 years.

Changes proposed by French Tech Finance Partners to meet a threefold objective

The French Tech Finance Partners body was launched in January 2023 by Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister Delegate in charge of the Digital Economy, to work on three priority areas: the financing of start-ups in the regions; the financing of DeepTech; and the selection criteria for French Tech programmes.

The selection criteria for the French Tech Next40/120 programme were reviewed by a dedicated working group made up of various players from the French Tech ecosystem, in order to put forward various proposals and adapt to changes in the world of tech and start-ups. These proposals have been reworked by the French Tech Mission to come up with new selection criteria.

These changes meet 3 objectives:

Better integrate the growing maturity of the French tech ecosystem, in particular its capacity to generate significant revenues
Balancing the selection of the Next40, expanding beyond unicorns and fund-raisings
Reinforce the impact commitments (ecological transition, parity, inclusion and diversity) required of companies

In concrete terms, what changes have been made to the selection criteria?

A change in the timetable

In order to take better account of revenues, the next selection will be based on sales generated in 2023. As a result, the selection timetable has been changed and the 2023 promotion has been extended until spring 2024.

The class of 2024/2025 will be announced in the summer of 2024.

Next40 criteria (top 40)

Selection will be made in descending order of each criterion.

20 places will be awarded to companies with the highest cumulative fundraising between June 2021 and June 2024.

20 places will be open to companies generating at least €100 million in net sales (excluding business volumes) and at least 15% annualised growth over 3 years.

Unicorns will no longer benefit from automatic admission and will therefore have to apply in the same way as all other companies.

French Tech 120 criteria (next 80 places)

Selection will be made in descending order of each criterion.

40 places will be awarded to the companies with the highest cumulative fundraising between June 2021 and June 2024.

40 places will be awarded to the companies with the highest net sales and at least 15% annualised growth.

The programme’s cross-cutting criteria

Constant generic criteria:

As has been the case since the programme was created, companies must have their head office in France and must not be listed on the stock exchange.

Reworked generic criteria:

The independence and innovation criteria have been strengthened. The regional criterion, which allowed at least 2 companies per region to be included, has been removed to allow greater flexibility according to the challenges faced by each region.

For the next selection round, the company’s creation date will be extended to January 1, 2004 (i.e. a maximum of 20 years in existence).

Greater impact criteria:

The professional equality index will have to present a score of at least 75 or present an action plan to improve it.

A carbon footprint (scope 1, 2 and 3) less than 3 years old must be included in the application.

The work begun in 2023 on diversity and inclusion issues (in particular the Parity Pact) will be continued in order to better engage the companies in the selection process on these issues.

Survey on the ambitions of French start-up managers for 2033

A survey that clarifies the ambitions of start-up managers

To mark French Tech’s 10th anniversary week, Mission French Tech, in collaboration with CSA (Consumer Science & Analytics), surveyed 206 start-up managers based throughout France. Of these, 2/3 were based outside the Paris region.

The aim of the survey was to find out about the ambitions and needs of start-ups, with a particular view to improving the support they receive from public institutions, through priority areas ranging from funding to gender equality and internationalisation.

The results of the survey

Funding, recruitment, ecological transition… Start-ups’ ambitions for the coming years are clearly taking shape!

Here is a selection of results to summarise the survey:

For 3/4 of the entrepreneurs questioned, France is a good place to start a business!
80% believe they will grow by creating opportunities to meet private sector customers
89% of entrepreneurs consider it a priority to increase public funding
95% of start-ups plan to expand internationally within 5 years
65% plan to recruit school leavers
34% of managers of start-ups between 2 and 5 years old plan to build a factory in the next few years
80% declare that they have a strategy to meet current environmental challenges
82% see artificial intelligence as an opportunity for their development
85% have set targets for gender parity within their start-ups

2023, 10 years of French Tech

[2013]

Voice-over – 10 years ago, Fleur Pellerin, Minister for the Digital Economy, launched the French Tech Mission.
Start-ups**, investors and decision-makers joined forces to promote and accelerate innovation.

[2014]

The Mission didn’t wait to make its mark on the other side of the Atlantic. It took part in the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, then inaugurated the first French Tech Hub in San Francisco. The same year, the first 9 French Tech Metropolises were accredited.

[2015]

The Grande École du Numérique opens its doors to train new talent.

[2016]

The expansion continues. In October 2016, the French Tech network already has 22 structured communities around the world that bring together entrepreneurs who deploy the vision of the French Tech public action.

[2017]

The following year, Station F sees the light of day in France. The world’s largest start-up campus was established in the heart of Paris and hosted the first French Tech Central. A local support centre dedicated to start-ups to give them easier access to public services. As for foreign talent… to attract them, the French Tech Visa, which simplifies access to work and residence permits, is now open to all start-ups.

[2019]

New initiatives are flourishing. The first French Tech Next40/120 programme supports 120 promising French start-ups and scale-ups, and the network of French Tech correspondents within our partner administrations is officially launched. This was followed by the French Tech Tremplin, which supports thousands of budding entrepreneurs from backgrounds that are under-represented in the French start-up ecosystem. Then there is the French Tech Community Fund, dedicated to financing impact projects. 2019 will also see the launch of the Tibi initiative, or how to mobilise the savings of institutional investors to finance technology companies.

[2021]

Then the kick-off of Scale up Europe under the French Presidency of the European Union enables the emergence of European technology champions.

[2022]

But in order to transform sectors of excellence on a long-term basis through technological innovation, a new year had to begin, and with it an unprecedented investment plan: France 2030. In the meantime, 25 unicorns*** have emerged on the French scene, including Exotech, the 1st industrial unicorn. Equality between men and women in the digital sector is progressing. 200 signatories commit to the Parity Pact.

[2023]

The 125 winners of the first promotion of the French Tech 2030 programme were announced, phase 2 of the Tibi initiative was launched and the Minister Delegate for the Digital Sector, Jean-Noël Barrot, presented “Je choisis la French Tech” (I choose French Tech). The aim of this plan is to double the use of French start-up solutions by public and private sector players by 2027. Today, we are present in 16 capital cities, 32 communities in France and 67 communities in 52 countries. We are determined to continue shaping our future by innovating and developing over the next 10 years.

The week of 16 to 20 October 2023 is an opportunity to look back on 10 years of French Tech, and to highlight the advances that have made the French start-up ecosystem so successful.

This ecosystem brings together start-ups, associations, private organisations and government departments, all of which are involved in devising and implementing public programmes and measures to strengthen the movement.

Mission French Tech, the public body responsible for supporting and promoting the French start-up ecosystem, would like to thank all those who have made French Tech a unique collective adventure recognised the world over.

More than 200 events labelled “French Tech’s 10 years anniversary Week”

From Singapore to San Diego to Bordeaux, over 200 events are being organised to highlight 10 years of French Tech and make tech accessible to everyone.

A host of players are involved, including the entire network of French Tech Capitals and Communities, as well as public bodies (such as the French Customs and Excise Authority and INPI) and private companies (such as Qonto [French Tech Next40] and Evaneos [French Tech Next40]).

Educational activities by La French Tech Mont-Blanc | 16 October

La French Tech Mont-Blanc is organising a week of educational activities with the Lycée polyvalent du Mont-Blanc (Passy) on the local economy, particularly in the industrial sector. It is also organising a learning expedition to Grenoble (30/10) and a conference on start-up financing (24/10) with the Banque de France.

Evening at the French Embassy in Delhi | 17 October

La French Tech India is organising an evening at the French Embassy in Delhi, to celebrate 10 years of French Tech and inspire future projects for French innovation in India.

Forum “Young people, players in tomorrow’s French Tech” | 19 October

More than 300 young people, from secondary school to high school, will be discovering #FrenchTech start-ups for a whole afternoon at the Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty. Teams from start-ups Yespark, Zeplug, Flying Whales and Ÿnsect will be on hand to talk to the innovators of tomorrow.

Qonto Masterclass | 19 October

Qonto, the unicorn offering the first all-in-one financial solution for SMEs and the self-employed, is organising a masterclass on “How to make your fundraising a success“.

Innovation Outre-Mer, an association that brings together nearly 700 start-ups and very small businesses and promotes innovation from overseas France around the world, is organising the IOMDays from 16 to 20 October.

The event includes a week of immersion at the heart of the ecosystem, to promote innovations with an environmental and social impact from the French overseas regions and territories. A major competition will be organised to reward innovative projects from overseas France.

La French Tech Bordeaux | 16 to 20 October

La French Tech Bordeaux, the French Tech Capital, is organising a week dedicated to entrepreneurship in tech from 16 to 20 October.

There will be a half-day of conferences on “Entrepreneurship for All”, a “Responsible Digital” workshop, a series of testimonials from entrepreneurs with “The Faces of French Tech”, a Job Connect and a PhD/start-up meeting!

“Je choisis la French Tech”, an initiative to promote public and private purchasing from start-ups

REF2023 (Rencontre des Entrepreneurs de France 2023 for Meeting of the Entrepreneurs of France 2023) was the perfect opportunity to present the “Je choisis la French Tech” initiative, launched by Minister Jean-Noël Barrot in June 2023 and operated by the French Tech Mission.

“Je choisis la French Tech” is the initiative that expresses the ambition to deploy French Tech solutions in all our businesses and administrations.

The initiative already has more than 300 signatory companies and start-ups (including Allianz, Bouygues, CMA-CGM, Payfit and Lydia) and more than 80 institutional partners (including the State Purchasing Department, Business France, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, the Ministry of the Armed Forces, MEDEF and Capitales French Tech)!

All are committed to supporting the choice for French start-ups.
